It is well

The history of the hymn "It is Well With My Soul" popped up in my email this morning from Page CXVI. Here's what it said,
"It is Well" was written by Horatio Spafford after losing his son to
scarlet fever, all of his real estate investments to the Great Chicago
Fire, and his 4 remaining children to the sinking of a boat.

Curious for more information I found The Library of Congress exhibit: The American Colony In Jerusalem and an entry on Wikipedia.

This is what I'm thinking about this morning.

Inspite of his calamity and loss, he could say "it is well with my soul", because he knew the Lord. Our circumstances do not dictate spiritual matters. I'm sure he felt and suffered because of the tremendous loss, however he had the Lord to draw from in his time of need and so "it was well with his soul"...praise the Lord

Thanks for commenting, Charlie. I love this hymn and find it even richer knowing the history of the man who wrote it. Only through Christ who sustains us can we have the ability to say "It is well" despite our situation around us.
